Unit 8 · Work and guests
teshrab shaay? Offers without bi-
Capitals mark the emphatic letters, 3 is ع and 7 is ح, and ' is the glottal stop that Cairo uses for q.
After words like 3aayez (want) and momken (can), and in offers, the verb drops its bi-: teshrab shaay? "would you like some tea?"; 3aayez teshrab 'eeh? "what would you like to drink?"; momken 'ashoof? "can I see?". With bi-, betishrab shaay? asks about a habit instead: "do you drink tea?". Hosts use the bare form all the time, which is why it comes with the visiting unit.
