Flashcards

Free Egyptian Arabic Anki decks

Two decks from the Bel Masri A1 course: 454 words and 597 sentences. They're plain text files, so they import into Anki and most other flashcard apps. Spellings use numbers for the sounds English lacks: 3 is ع, 7 is ح, capitals mark the emphatic letters, and ' is the glottal stop Cairo uses for q.

How to import a deck into Anki

  1. Download a deck below. It's a plain .txt file.
  2. Open Anki on your computer and go to File > Import.
  3. Pick the file you downloaded.
  4. Check the settings. The field separator should be Tab, and “Allow HTML” should be off. Recent versions of Anki fill these in for you.
  5. Choose the Basic note type and a deck to put the cards in. You can make a new deck called Egyptian Arabic.
  6. Check the field mapping. Field 1 goes to Front, field 2 goes to Back, and field 3 goes to Tags.
  7. Click Import. Anki syncs the cards to your phone the next time you sync.

The decks are text only, with no audio. To hear a word, look it up in how to say it. Every word there has a recording.
