The rest is our own data from Bel Masri, an Egyptian Arabic app that launched on 15 October 2026, and from the spoken corpus behind its lessons. Every figure carries its source and year, and the first-party data is free to reuse with a link back here.

Egyptian Arabic statistics: speakers, Egypt and reach
How many people speak Egyptian Arabic, how big Egypt is, and why the dialect is understood far beyond it. Figures as the publishers print them.

Why people learn Egyptian Arabic
Bel Masri asks every new learner one question at sign-up: what brought you here? One answer each, 88 learners so far.
| Talk to my family | 41% | 36 |
| Understand what's being said around me | 30% | 26 |
| Going to Egypt | 18% | 16 |
| Hold onto where I'm from | 8% | 7 |
| Surprise my teta and gedo | 3% | 3 |
52% of Egyptian Arabic learners give a family reason for learning: talking to relatives, surprising grandparents, or holding onto where they are from (Bel Masri, 88 learners, 2026).
18% are preparing for a trip to Egypt, the only non-family motivation that reaches double digits.

How much Egyptian Arabic learners start with
The second sign-up question: how much do you have already? One answer each, 86 learners.
| I understand some when it's spoken, but I can't read it | 45% | 39 |
| Starting from zero | 36% | 31 |
| I know a handful of words | 16% | 14 |
| I can speak a little, just never learned the letters | 2% | 2 |
48% of Egyptian Arabic learners are heritage speakers of some kind: they understand spoken Arabic or can speak a little, but never learned to read it (Bel Masri, 86 learners, 2026).
36% describe themselves as starting from zero. On our Palestinian sister app the picture is reversed, with 44% starting from zero and 32% heritage speakers, which fits a dialect everyone has heard in films.

The United States leads with 38% of installs, and Egypt itself is second with 26% (Bel Masri, 95 installs, 2026).
Android accounts for 85% of installs and Apple devices for 15%.
The iOS app went live a week after Android, so the Apple share is still catching up.
Asked how they found the app, 29% say they searched or browsed the App Store or Google Play, 39% say social media (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube or Facebook), and 12% a web search (105 answers).

Spoken Egyptian Arabic corpus statistics
The lessons are built from a corpus of spoken Egyptian Arabic, written in the dialect rather than Modern Standard Arabic. Counts from corpus version 0.1.0, 23 October 2026.
The Bel Masri corpus holds 463 spoken Egyptian Arabic words and 611 example sentences across 10 units, 86 lessons and 10 dialogues, covering 29 grammar points (Bel Masri corpus 0.1.0, 2026).
A beginner sentence in the corpus averages 3.7 words; the 611 sentences contain 2,247 running words and 765 distinct word forms.
Knowing the 100 most frequent word forms covers 53.2% of all words in the corpus; the top 50 cover 40.4%, the top 200 cover 68.1%, and the top 500 cover 88.2%. The full ranked list, with a CSV download, is the Egyptian Arabic word frequency list.
Word forms counted as written in the lessons, with attached articles and prepositions (el-beet counts as one form).
The ten most frequent forms in the Egyptian lessons are ya, da, di, fi, 'ana, es-saa3a, mish, kareem, la', feeh.
What people search for
Bel Masri's 450 “how to say it in Egyptian Arabic” pages appeared in Google results 5,135 times in the 89 days to 21 October 2026 (Google Search Console, 2026).
84% of those pages (380 of 450) were shown for at least one search in that window.
The most searched-for pages were ghee, cairo, egypt, england, baby, water, with “ghee” alone shown 338 times.
Methodology
First-party figures come from Bel Masri's own product analytics and are aggregates only. Installs count distinct devices on which the app was first opened, including a handful of testers before launch. Onboarding answers are single-choice and count each learner once. Development builds and emulators are excluded.
Corpus figures are computed from the corpus files by a script in the website repository and refreshed with each corpus release. Search figures are Google Search Console totals for pages under the how-to-say path, finalized data only.
Third-party figures are quoted from the primary publisher and re-checked on each update. If you spot a newer edition of any source, write to [email protected]. The Palestinian sister page, with a larger learner sample, is at tfaddalu.com/arabic-learning-statistics.
