Egyptian Arabic word frequency list
Every word in our spoken Egyptian corpus, all 463 of them, ranked by how many of its 611 sentences they appear in. Tap a word for its page, with audio and examples.
What the numbers say
- The 100 most frequent word forms cover 53.2% of all running words in the corpus; the top 500 cover 88.2%.
- 42 words appear in ten or more sentences, and 301 in at least two. The rest appear once: specific nouns you meet in one lesson and rarely again.
- The top of the list is the small words that hold a sentence together: ya (the vocative, as in ya Ahmed), da and di (this), fi (in), mish (not). The first content words are the ones a beginner course leans on: hours, names, polite phrases.
A word's score is the number of sentences it appears in, counted at dictionary-form level, so beyoot and el-beet both count toward beet. This is a beginner lesson corpus, not a transcript of street talk, which is why classroom and greeting words sit higher than they would in a recording of a Cairo café. More corpus figures are on the statistics page.

Questions people ask
What is this list based on?+
The 611 sentences and dialogue lines in the Bel Masri lesson corpus, version 0.1.0. A word's score is the number of sentences it appears in, counted at the dictionary-form level: beyoot and el-beet both count toward beet. It is a beginner lesson corpus, so classroom and greeting words rank higher than they would in a recording of a Cairo street.
How many words do I need to understand everyday Egyptian Arabic?+
In this corpus the 100 most frequent word forms cover 53.2% of all running words, the top 200 cover 68.1%, and the top 500 cover 88.2%. The same shape holds in every language: a small core does most of the work, and the long tail is where the specific nouns live.
