Unit 1 · Hello and who are you?

Egyptian, American, Indian

Capitals mark the emphatic letters, 3 is ع and 7 is ح, and ' is the glottal stop that Cairo uses for q.

To say where someone's from, add -i to the place: maSr gives maSri, el-hind gives hindi. For a woman, add -yya on top: maSreyya, hindeyya, 'amreekeyya. A few change shape a little, like 'amreeka to 'amreeki and 'engeltera to 'engleezi. These are ordinary adjectives, so they describe things too: 'akl maSri is Egyptian food.
