Unit 7 · My day, my week

The days of the week

Capitals mark the emphatic letters, 3 is ع and 7 is ح, and ' is the glottal stop that Cairo uses for q.

Days take el-, and most are counted from Sunday: el-7ad (Sunday, "the first"), el-etneen (Monday, "the second"), et-talaat (Tuesday), el-arba3 (Wednesday), el-khamees (Thursday). Then el-gom3a (Friday, the day of gathering) and es-sabt (Saturday). In Egypt the weekend is Friday and Saturday. For "on Monday" you don't need a word for "on": 'ana mashghool el-etneen, "I'm busy on Monday".
